Actually the beginning, during the 70-80s rap lyrics, flow, beats were pretty plain and simple. Nothing impressive. But during the 90s, something big has started happening when the Wu-Tang and Nas stepped in. The lyrics, flow, beats became much and much better. During the early 2000s, the dirty south vibe started stepping in and the lyrics were just a little stepped down, the flow switched (not negatively) and the beats started improving. During the late 2000s, we started to hear a lot of trap/rnb influences, the lyrics stepped down a lot, flow stayed the same but the beats improved dramatically. During the 2010s – now, we are starting see other sub-rap genres really emerge into the scene like drill.
Trap is now the most mainstream sound of rap because of the dirty south’s dominance since the 2000s. The lyrics have become ridiculously bad, the flow has improved and the beats have improved amazingly because of recent technology. So the only thing that has improved are the beats.
Man 90’s rap was GOLDEN. Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Jay-Z, B.I.G., Tupac, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, LL Cool J, Mobb Deep, Big Pun, DMX, and so many more. Man for all my fellow hip hop junkies. I’m jealous if you grew up in this era. Cause that was the time to live in!!!
Old school rap is forever the greatest type of rap, but 90% of the people commenting probably listen to the music we have now and have the decency to call it trash!
